2. Understanding basic rules
Understanding the basic rules is essential for playing Mahjong. Learn what actions are legal and how to make valid moves.
Fundamental Rules
Mahjong follows a set of core rules that govern all gameplay. Understanding these rules is essential before you can play effectively.
Objective of the Game
The goal is to be the first player to complete a winning hand by collecting:
- Four sets (chows, pungs, or kongs)
- One pair (eyes)
Legal Actions
During your turn, you can perform several legal actions:
1. Draw a Tile
On your turn, you must draw one tile from the wall. You can then either:
- Keep the tile and discard another
- Declare a win if the tile completes your hand
2. Discard a Tile
After drawing, you must discard one tile face-up in the center. This tile becomes available for other players to claim.
Claiming Discarded Tiles
You can claim tiles discarded by other players to form sets:
Chow (Sequence)
Claim a discarded tile to complete a sequence of three consecutive tiles of the same suit. You can only claim a chow from the player immediately before you (to your left).
Pung (Triplet)
Claim a discarded tile to complete a triplet (three identical tiles). You can claim a pung from any player.
Kong (Quad)
Claim a discarded tile or use a tile from your hand to form a kong (four identical tiles). This is a special set that requires drawing a replacement tile from the dead wall.
Important Rules
- You must always have 13 tiles (or 14 after drawing, before discarding)
- Only one player can claim a discarded tile
- If multiple players want the same tile, priority goes: Win > Pung/Kong > Chow
- Once you claim a tile, you must reveal the completed set
- Concealed sets (made from your own draws) remain hidden until you win
Winning the Game
You win by completing a valid hand:
- Four sets (chows, pungs, or kongs) + one pair
- You can win by drawing a tile or claiming a discarded tile
- You must declare "Mahjong!" when you win
